Our latest article in the June issue of Feed & Additive Magazine sheds light on the evolving challenges faced by poultry producers in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.
Authored by Rony Makdessi, Senior Broiler Technical Support, and Danielle Ayyash, Layer Technical and Nutrition Unit Head, the piece explores regional health threats, environmental pressures, and the growing demand for tailored nutritional strategies.
“While Avian Influenza isn’t a major concern across the region, viral diseases like Gumboro variant strains and Newcastle Disease are persistent threats,” Makdessi explains. He notes that these issues often coincide with additional stressors, further exacerbating mortality rates and production costs. “Government protocols and vaccination programs are often insufficient,” he adds.
The article highlights how UTRIX is addressing these gaps by supporting farmers with customized biosecurity plans, fresh feed additives, technical support, and analytical services. “We also help producers fine-tune their formulations, optimizing digestible amino acids and incorporating enzyme and emulsifier technologies,” says Makdessi. “Many small and medium-sized farmers lack the expertise to formulate their own premixes, making supplementing via drinking water a popular solution.”
Ayyash emphasizes the need for region-specific strategies around heat stress, especially as climate patterns shift. “Lebanon, for example, is already experiencing summer conditions months ahead of schedule,” she says. “In poorly ventilated closed barns, or open-sided poultry houses, heat stress becomes a major concern, requiring not just general solutions but ones built on deep local knowledge and technical support.”
